Here in the UK we have had the most exciting Olympic summer and even occasional glimpses of the sun! But now, as summer slips to autumn and the days shorten attention turns to the next ‘main event’. USA Car hire companies are well ahead of this curve and have already put seasonal surcharges for car hire in place for the peak Christmas period.
Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. and Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which Hertz would acquire Dollar Thrifty for $87.50 per share in cash in a transaction valued at a corporate enterprise value of approximately $2.3 billion.
As part of the deal, Hertz has reached an agreement to sell Advantage (currently its car rental leisure arm) to Franchise Services of North America and Macquarie Capital. Other car rental companies within that stable are: U-Save, Rent-a-Wreck, Practicar and X-Press Rent-a-car. That sale is contingent upon the successful merger of Hertz and Dollar Thrifty. What are the requirements for driving licences for car hire in the USA?
To hire a car in the USA all drivers need a full, valid driving licence from their country of residence. If you have a driving ban in your home country you cannot hire a car in the USA. Some car hire companies require that you have held your full licence for at least one year. But not all make this distinction – please see the checklist below.
Since June 8th 2015 the paper counterpart of a UK photo ID driving licence has ceased to have legal status. A UK driving licence is now either a paper licence or just the photo ID. A paper licence will have been issued prior to 1998 and may be pink or green. This is all you need to collect your car in the USA. Alamo Car Hire is the third largest car hire company in the US. Alamo is owned by the same company as Enterprise Rent-a-Car, the largest car rental company in the USA and National Car Hire. Enterprise Holdings is a private cash-rich family-run company with a revenue of over 12 billion US dollars.
Alamo was founded in 1974 with just 4 locations in Florida and quickly grew to become the largest supplier in the USA of car rentals to international travelers with nearly 6000 locations, including over 400 airport locations. In 2005 Alamo launched Online Check-in and now operate over 170 self-service kiosks at over 60 locations. Until recently it has been very difficult for travelers from the UK to use the kiosks but we have become aware over the last few months that this is now possible.
