Car rental shuttles to cruise ports – part 1 – Florida

Florida Car Hire Shuttles to Cruise Ports.

Tourists that have hired a car for part of their holiday before or after embarking on a Florida cruise will need to get from the cruise port to the rental car location or vice versa, as easily as possible. Space at busy ports is at a premium, and car rental depots usually use a nearby location, often the nearest airport, to service cruise arrivals and departures.  For this a complimentary shuttle is usually, but not always, provided.

In Florida there are four main ports: Port Everglades, Port of Miami, Port Canaveral and Port of Tampa.

Port Everglades is located between Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Dania.  Car rentals are serviced at the airport, Alamo provides a complimentary shuttle to and from the airport to the port. To collect your car from Fort Lauderdale or drop off there, just select Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) when making your reservation.  Dollar provides a complimentary shuttle from its cruise port location at 2400 Miami Road.  For other car hire suppliers taxis and shuttles have a fixed tariff to and from the airport.

Port of Miami car rentals are served by Miami Airport, with Alamo/National and Dollar/Thrifty both providing shuttle service between the two.  The shuttles leave from the rental car depot at Miami International Airport which is located just off-site and accessed by a monorail between the depot and the airport. Fixed tariffs are also available for taxis and shuttles between the port and Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale Airport.  To use Budget following a cruise, select their downtown ‘Port’ location, and then you will need to get a taxi from the port itself.  The journey is about 7 minutes, and costs about $15.  Budget does not offer a shuttle to either this location or the airport, from the cruise port. To book with Dollar, book 3900 NW 25th Street as your collection or return location. The shuttle will then take you to the airport or port accordingly. The shuttle runs approximately every 45 minutes when a ship is in port.Customers arriving into the port and taking a Dollar shuttle to the rental location will be charged a Port Recovery Fee of $3.95 per rental. Shuttle service is not provided to or from the airport.

Port Canaveral is served by Alamo, Dollar, Budget and Avis, all operating complimentary shuttles from their own locations.

  • Alamo is at: 6211 N Atlantic Ave, 32920  Cape  Canaveral
  • Dollar is at: 6799 N Atlantic Ave, 32920 Cape Canaveral
  • Budget is at: 8401 Astronaut Blvd, 32920 Cape Canaveral
  • Avis is at: 6650 N Atlantic Ave, 32920 Cape Canaveral

Port of Tampa is served by Alamo with a complimentary shuttle from 725 S Harbor Island Blvd, Tampa – select Tampa Shuttle – Alamo to make a reservation).  Dollar also provide a complimentary shuttle to and from Tampa International Airport.  For other car rental suppliers once again, you would need to arrange for a taxi or shuttle.

I would just like to share that you may need to provide proof of your reservation to the shuttle driver when coming off a cruise. It was commented to me that those with their paper vouchers to hand were at an advantage over those needing to find details on their phones.

I looked up the address you listed for the Alamo shuttle in Tampa. That address is for the Westin Hotel. Is that correct?

    Hi Laura,
Yes, that is correct, the location that serves the port is at the Westin Hotel with a free shuttle to the Port. You may have to call in advance of your return if you wanted to collect from there after your cruise.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Elle
